Wow. Didn’t expect to like, or shall I say LOVE, rattlesnake and rabbit as much as I did.

Here’s the low-down:

I kept hearing about Wurstkuche and that I had to try it. They call themselves an “exotic sausage grill,” so if that doesn’t get a girl to get up and see what all the fuss is about, I don’t know what will. The fact that my husband is the one who arranged the tasting makes me wonder if he’s trying to tell me something.  All jokes aside, this place is fantastic. We went to the Downtown L.A. location but there’s also one in Venice.  When we first walked in, I already felt cooler. There was a hipster vibe, but welcoming and friendly.

After surveying the menu and asking the guy at the counter what I should try, my husband and I decided on the “Rattlesnake & Rabbit” topped with sauerkraut and the “Duck and Bacon” topped with sweet peppers. We were also encouraged to order the duck-fat fries and a few beers, so needless to say I wasn’t going to be wearing any lingerie that night.

When our food arrived I couldn’t wait to take a bite out of my first exotic sausage. I have to admit, I was a little nervous about trying rattlesnake and rabbit, but boy, did it exceed my expectations.

The sausages were served in the perfect sized, fresh baked roll.  They weren’t as big as I thought either. I could easily eat a whole one….(I know, that’s what she said). The Rattlesnake & Rabbit was so full of flavor and had a smokiness to it that I wasn’t expecting. The Duck & Bacon had a nice big kick to it, but it didn’t overpower. I love spicy food, so I’m surprised I ended up liking the smokey R & R the best. The quality of the meat was on point and all I was really tasting was delicious-ness. I didn’t even think twice about eating rattlesnake or rabbit. It also didn’t hurt that I was taking breaks inbetween by eating their decadent, fat fries that come with about 10 different dipping sauces to choose from. We got the chipotle ailoi and the pesto mayo. Both were great.

What I loved most about this meal, is that even though I was indulging, I didn’t feel overly full when we were finished. And we had sausage, beer and fries!! Not sure how that happened, but I do know that whatever they’re doing in the kitchen is working. I will definitely be back for another sampling of an exotic sausage and I’m sure my husband will join me.
